Family Friendly Activities in Oahu
When we have been to Oahu, we recommend staying on the North Shore (less crowded) but there are plenty of things to do besides sitting on the beach. Oahu is a fantastic island if you are interested in history and culture with multiple museums and Pearl Harbor. But those things are not super exciting places for kids to hang out. Depending on the age of your children, these may be of interest:
Hiking:
- Lighthouse Trail
- Outstanding views of the coastline including Koko Crater - 2.5 miles round trip with ascent of about 500 ft. Trail provides excellent view of migrating whales (Nov - May) and a lighthouse (not open to the public) makes for picturesque views.
- Pillbox Trail
- One of the best sunrise hikes on Oahu taken to old WWII pillboxes and is less than one mile round trip with ascent of about 400 ft.
- Turtle Bay Beach
- Ideal for beach lovers seeking out turtles and outdoor adventure seekers on the eastern shore. Head to the Turtle Bay Resort and follow the path on the right to the public beach. Hiking trails go through secluded coves and by Hawaiian fishponds and ruins.
Stargazing:
- Stars Above Hawaii
- Explore the universe showcasing the most up to date NASA discoveries as well as learning about ancient Polynesian navigation. See diamond stars like never before, captivating all ages.
Other Activities:
- Evening Fireworks Catamaran
- Ensure a great view of the spectacular fireworks show, which lights up the sky over Waikiki Beach just one night a week. Enjoy great music and drinks from the cash bar as you cruise along the coast and start your weekend with a bang.
