There has been a lot of confusion upon the unveiling of the ETIAS, European Travel Information and Authorization System, coming in 2021.  This will affect everyone who plans to travel to ETIAS countries for 90 days or less, like vacations and includes popular countries like France and Italy.  If the following FAQ don't answer your questions, check out the ETIAS website.

  • Is ETIAS a visa?
    • According to the EU, it is NOT a visa, although they do ask for personal information that they use to identify if you are on a watch list (and other security databases).  It costs $7 euros and can only be done online, unlike visas where you have to apply at the consulate.
  • What sort of information is needed to apply?
    • Full official name
    • Date and place of birth
    • Current address
    • Passport details
    • Parents' information
    • Intended country of first entry
    • Past European travel details
    • Criminal history
    • Employment history
    • Additional questions for : drug use, travel to conflict areas, experience with terrorism or human trafficking.
  • Which countries does this impact?
    • Mostly mainland Europe (specific list is HERE), but includes popular countries like France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, to a total of 22 European countries.  Non-European countries include Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway.  This also includes country-cities like Vatican City and Monaco.
  • Do children need to apply as well?
    • Yes, parents/guardians will have to fill out the application, but the 7 Euro fee will be waived.
  • What if I already have a work Visa for Europe?
    • If you already went through the effort of getting a Visa because you are staying longer than 90 days in any of the member countries, you don't have to get ETIAS authorization.
  • Do I have to apply every time I travel to Europe?
    • Once you have authorization, it will be good for three years and valid as long as you are not staying longer than 90 days.
  • How do I know if I am authorized?
    • 95% of people will get an email stating that they are authorized within 20 minutes of checking against various security databases.  If there is any irregularities, you will receive an email requesting additional information.
